Howard City is small, but it’s unusually easy to reach. Three highways meet at US-131 Exit 118, about two miles west of the village: the US-131 freeway running north and south, M-46 heading east toward Lakeview and Edmore, and M-82 heading west toward Newaygo and Fremont.
This guide covers the main routes in, how far each nearby town is, and how to plan for a Michigan winter.
Routes by direction
From the south: Grand Rapids, Cedar Springs, Sand Lake, Pierson
Take US-131 north to Exit 118, then follow M-46 east about two miles into the village. From Pierson and Sand Lake, that’s roughly ten minutes. From Cedar Springs, about twenty. From downtown Grand Rapids, allow 40 to 45 minutes.
A useful detail for anyone coming from the south: in the morning, most traffic on this stretch of US-131 is heading toward Grand Rapids, not away from it. You’ll be driving against the flow at both ends of the day.
From the north: Big Rapids, Morley, Stanwood
Take US-131 south to Exit 118, then M-46 east into the village. From Morley, it’s about ten minutes. From Big Rapids, about 25.
From the west: Newaygo, Fremont, Grant, White Cloud
M-82 runs east from Newaygo along the southern edge of the Manistee National Forest and ends at Exit 118. Continue east on M-46 into the village. From Newaygo, plan on about half an hour.
From Grant and White Cloud, most routes use county roads, and your map app will pick the fastest line from your address. Both are around 18 to 19 miles away.
From the east: Lakeview, Edmore, Greenville
From Lakeview and Edmore, take M-46 west into Howard City. From Lakeview, it’s about twenty minutes.
From Greenville, about 19 miles to the southeast, most routes follow two-lane state and county roads. Expect around half an hour.

Winter driving
Winter is the honest test of any commute in West Michigan. A few things help.
Favor the freeway. US-131 is a major route, and freeways are generally among the first roads cleared after a storm. On a snowy morning, the longer freeway route is often faster and safer than a shortcut on county roads.
Drive it before you sign. If you’re considering an office in a new town, make the drive at least once on a winter morning at the hour you’d normally leave. It’s the only way to know what you’re signing up for.
Leave room in your schedule. Early appointments on a snowy morning are where stress comes from. If you can, book client meetings for mid-morning in January and February.
Keep a kit in the car. A scraper, a blanket, a phone charger, and a bag of sand or kitty litter for traction are cheap insurance.
Know your backup plan. On the worst days, it may make more sense to work from home. A lease and a work routine that allow for that make winter much easier.
Parking when you arrive
One advantage of an office in a small village is what happens at the end of the drive. There are no parking ramps, no meters, and no circling the block. Ask about parking and snow removal when you tour, so you know where you’ll park all year.
Getting here for a tour
The easiest way to judge the commute is to make it. Request a tour and choose a time close to when you’d normally arrive for work. For more on the location, see location and directions.
